MAMAs Donate Joel Gersmann's Piano to the Eastside Community Center

The Board of Directors for the Madison Area Music Awards has been very busy over the summer. Work has commenced on establishing several programs to benefit Madison-area youth. One of these is at the East Madison Community Center where the MAMAs are working with director Tom Moen to establish a music education program. The first step is to supply the center with instruments. Then the center will be staffed with paid instructors to teach the kids.
Recently Gerri Ager, wife of the late Joel Gersmann, donated Joel’s piano to the MAMAs. The MAMAs in turn donated the piano to the East Madison Community Center as the first step in establishing this program. Ward Brodt Music donated the moving services and the piano was successfully delivered on August 21, 2009. The instrument is a beautiful antique, an Emerson upright from around 1900, with exquisite tone.
Gersmann was a very popular figure in the Madison area, having been associated with the Broom Street Theatre for many years. He also wrote book and theatre reviews for Isthmus. Joel was a classical music fanatic and he died in 2005.
